Gas Pressure Washer Buyer’s Guide
How to Start a Gas Pressure Washer?
Gas pressure washers may look large, industrial, and intimidating, but they are actually surprisingly simple to use once you know what you’re doing. There are a few simple steps that you can follow when starting up a gas pressure washer that will make your life far easier no matter what type of gas pressure washer you’re using. First, set up your gas pressure washer carefully. Ensure that it’s on a flat surface and that the filters are clean.
Connect a garden hose to your water supply, and the other end to your gas pressure washer’s water inlet. Then, connect the high-pressure hose to the water outlet of your gas pressure washer. Plug the gun assembly to the other end of the hose, and attach your nozzle of choice to the other end of the gun.
Then turn on the water and squeeze the trigger on your spray gun to purge the system of excess air. Now you’re all ready to start up the washer. Open the fuel valve. This may already be open, so check which position it is in before you begin. Then, open the choke by moving it to the left, before doing the same to the throttle, moving it left to open it fully.
Turn the engine on with its activation system, and your gas pressure washer will begin to start up a little; the remaining steps need to be performed with extreme care, as the device has already been activated at this point. Hold the spray gun firmly, point it away from anything vulnerable, and squeeze the trigger to ease the pressure.
While you’re holding the spray gun trigger down, pull the recoil on your gas pressure washer’s engine. Finally, close the choke again by moving it to the right, and you’re ready to start cleaning with your gas pressure washer.

What Type of Gas Does a Pressure Washer Use?
Most models of gas pressure washer are compatible with a wide range of different types of gas, much like any other smaller gas-powered mechanical device. There are a couple of guidelines worth following when choosing gas for your gas pressure washer, however, as different types of gas offer different levels of performance and different risks.
As a general rule, when choosing gas for a gas pressure washer, you should use clean, unleaded gasoline with a higher octane content. Anything with at least 87 octane should be fine, but make sure that it’s fresh, clean, and safe.
If you use your gas pressure washer regularly, it’s fine to use gasoline containing up to 10 percent ethanol, but anything higher than this should be avoided. If you don’t use your gas pressure washer regularly, however, ethanol can cause damage to the machinery, so it’s worth buying ethanol free gasoline in this case.

How to use a Gas Pressure Washer?
Gas pressure washers are easier to use than you might expect, as long as you follow a few simple guidelines. Most models of gas pressure washer operate in a similar manner, but it is always worth checking the user manual for your particular model of gas pressure washer before use to ensure that it operates as expected. First, prepare your pressure washer for use. Set it up stably on a secure, flat surface, connect up all of the hoses, and fill the gas pressure washer with gasoline and engine oil.
Hold the starting grip and pull firmly to start up the engine, making it ready to use for cleaning. Ensure that you’ve attached your preferred spray tip to the spray gun of your gas pressure washer before you begin to clean. Start cleaning with the spray tip of your hose positioned at least 2 feet away from the surface, before slowly and carefully moving it a little closer.
Gas pressure washers are powerful enough that holding the tip closer than 12 inches from the surface can lead to damaging whatever you’re trying to clean. Maintain the position of the spray nozzle, holding it at a 45 degree angle to the surface. This will help to ensure that the debris you’ve loosened with the high pressure is blown away from you, rather than blasting back onto you and the areas you have already cleaned.
Spray in side to side sweeps, moving evenly, and ensuring that you don’t hold the spray nozzle in one place for an extended period of time. If using detergent, spray it evenly across the surface and leave it for 3 to 5 minutes to soak in (but avoid leaving it long enough that it dries) before you rinse your surface.
Then, to finish, follow the instructions in your gas pressure washer’s user manual for flushing traces of detergent out of your system. All models of gas pressure washer operate differently for this feature and require different guidelines, so reading the manual is always the correct option for understanding this part of the system!
Gas pressure washers offer a far higher level of cleaning power than standard garden hoses, but that increased power comes with a much higher safety risk. Always wear protective gear when using a gas pressure washer, particularly safety goggles and protective footwear!
Did you know?
Gas pressure washers are generally more high pressure than electric pressure washers. This makes them an excellent choice for larger domestic cleaning projects or even commercial or professional cleaning use, although they’re also significantly heavier than their electric counterparts.
