Electric Pressure Washer Buyer’s Guide
With so many different types of pressure washers on the market, it can be hard to find the right one for you. That’s why we’ve put together a list of the top-rated electric pressure washers on the market, including all their features. There are many differences between electric pressure washer models and designs, so knowing what to look for is an important part of the purchasing process. If you buy a pressure cleaner that doesn’t suit your needs properly, you might not get another chance to replace it!
Different users will have different washing needs; consider all the different features you may want. One consumer may want a soap dispenser, but you might think it’s more important to have a combination of different nozzles. It all comes down to personal preference.
You should always ensure you’re well-informed about each decision, especially when shopping for these types of tools.
PSI
A higher PSI (pounds per square inch measurement) generally means more water flows through the washer’s hose every second. A higher water flow usually equates to more cleaning power and a stronger force behind the pressure’s stream of water. Ask yourself what you need your washer for. Is it to tackle driveways, patios, patio furniture, grass, vehicles, or something else? If you work with hard surfaces, you may need a model up to and exceeding a 3000 PSI pressure.
It’s possible to have too much PSI if you’re using it for weaker surfaces, such as a lawn. You don’t want to risk any damage to the thing you’re washing, so you should choose something that’s balanced for the purpose you need it for, rather than going for the strongest PSI measurement each time. This is an especially important consideration for professionals.
GPM
GPM (gallons per minute) is also an important consideration when shopping for these machines. This refers to the volume of water (otherwise known as the flow rate) that runs through the pressure washer’s nozzle. If you’re on a time limit, this is an important measurement to consider as the higher the GPM, the quicker you can finish your cleaning job.
The Hose
While you can technically attach your own hose to an electric pressure washer, it’s not always an option if you’ve got a limited budget or need a specific type of hose. Ideally, try to purchase one that’s long enough to reach most dirty areas but powerful enough to still wash them properly without dropping in pressure or PSI.
A lot of pressure washers also come with additional accessories, such as different nozzles, which will allow you to tackle a number of cleaning jobs. Our electric pressure washer reviews above will let you know whether they come with extras and add-ons, but it’s always worth checking the product description, too, as this will give you more information.
Extra Features
Pressure washer technology has come a long way. There are many different types of pressure washers on the market with a number of different features. With different PSIs, soap dispensers, and more, you can easily find a fit for you. Some pressure washer models even come as 2-in-1 vacuums! This means you can vacuum your floors and carpets. Tackle dirt, debris, pet hair, and more with these built-in vacuum cleaners.
However, just like with the PSI, be mindful of the suction power that the model you’re looking at offers. And don’t expect amazing vacuum features. Keep in mind that since this is a 2-in-1, your vacuum cleaner won’t be as nearly as impressive as the latest robot (robot vacuum). But it will still make your chore maintenance a dream!
Washers with lots of additional features may have higher prices, and may even cost up to $400. However, make sure to shop around, as you still may be able to get one of these high-powered washing machines for $150 and under.
How Do I Use an Electric Pressure Washer?
The first step is to plug your electric pressure washer in. However, unlike many similar cleaning units, some electric pressure washers are designed for external plugs and power sources rather than the normal ones you’ll see inside your house. Once it’s plugged in, attach the hose as tightly as possible. Ensure there aren’t any obvious gaps or cuts that could result in water spraying out in the wrong direction.
Make sure your power washer has an adequate supply of water, whether it’s a built-in tank, an external reservoir, or a direct connection to the water mains – be sure you’ve filled up any extra detergent tanks if you’re planning to use soap!
Once you know your pressure washer has power and water, attach a spray tip to the end of the hose. Some models might come with multiple tips, so make sure you know what they do ahead of time.
Why Does My Electric Pressure Washer Keep Cutting Out?
If your electric pressure washer keeps cycling on and off, it could be a pressure issue rather than an engine problem, especially if the water seems to be slowly fading rather than cutting out. Check for obvious water leaks in the hose and washer frame – this will cause water to drain out and the pressure to drop.
If you find one, either replace the hose or repair it with something waterproof, like rubber repair tape. If there’s no leak, your engine may need attention. See if there’s something wrong with one of the connections, or look at the place it’s drawing power from to see if it’s actually keeping up with the demand.
If you have a gas pressure washer, you may also need to check the filter. Pressure washer filters trap dust and debris and stop them from entering the gas engine.
How to Winterize an Electric Pressure Washer
Many customers will only want to use their washers in the spring and summer months. To winterize an electric pressure washer for when you’re not using it, remove any water and cleaning agents from its tanks. Fill it up with some fresh water and run it through the nozzle at a low pressure to clear out the internal pipes. It should be almost completely drained of water when you’re done, and the rest should hopefully evaporate naturally.
Once you’re sure your pressure washer is empty, add some ‘pump saver’ antifreeze. Make sure that it’s running through the entire system. This will stay in liquid form throughout the whole winter – it’s safe to leave it in the electric pressure washer until you need it again.
Did you Know?
Some nozzles follow a universal color-coding rule based on their spray angles. For example, a black nozzle is often a whole 65 degrees, while red is 0. If you’re looking for more information, cool facts, or how-to guides, we have lots of pressure washer content on our site. Check it out!
