Jennifer Howard
Diversified small farmer, peony lover, beekeeper, and content strategist for green industries. I grew up loving and riding horses before the field of agriculture lured me in. I was basically raised in a barn and it’s where I’m most at home.
Experience
I worked for 10 years in national advertising agencies with clients in retail and healthcare fields but missed a meaningful connection with the land. Now I write and design marketing content for agricultural land grant universities and Extension, seed and soil amendment corporations, and farm businesses.
I also write feature magazine content for a major floral industry publication. I love to spotlight growing businesses.
Education
I received a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in advertising from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am a journeyman-level beekeeper and am also trained in web and graphic design. But everything I really needed to know, I learned on the farm – in a stall, pasture, chicken coop, or raised bed. Life’s best-taught lessons are learned hands-on and never end.

Amanda Shiffler
Most comfortable with soil under her fingernails, Amanda’s enthusiasm is sparked by gardening, agriculture, and all things plant-related. With a master’s degree in agriculture and more than a decade of experience gardening and tending to her yard, she combines her plant knowledge and a knack for writing to share what she knows and loves.
Experience
Amanda’s interest in writing about agriculture, gardening, and plants started when she was working on her thesis research as a graduate student. Hours and hours spent in the greenhouse or hydroponics grow rooms brought out a desire to learn more, and to share what she knew with others. Which led her, after graduation, to the University of Idaho where she worked as a research support scientist in potato cropping systems management.
With a knack for taking research findings and turning them into written articles, Amanda started to build a writing portfolio that contained peer-reviewed journal articles, industry-related magazines, and conference proceedings.
After spending a decade tending to her own lawn and garden, Amanda took a leap in 2017 and struck out to begin a career in freelance writing.
Drawing on her education, professional experience, and personal know-how, you can now find her sharing her passion across the internet, covering a range of plant-related subjects.
Education
“You can take the girl off the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the girl.”
After three years at Michigan State studying agriculture, Amanda began her westward journey on the search for new adventures. Finding herself in Utah, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in horticulture and a master’s degree in Agriculture from Brigham Young University. As a graduate student, she focused her studies on plant nutrition and soil fertility in cropping systems. In collaboration with her graduate advisor and a pertinent member of her graduate committee, she validated an alternative soil testing method measuring boron in alkaline soils.
