As you can see above, we have loads of mower recommendations to suit any lawn. But when looking for the best battery lawn mower to suit your needs, there are lots of different things to consider. From heigh adjustment to the mower’s build, here are some factors we thought you might find useful:
Functions
You’ll need to look at different functions of lawn mowers when searching for the one that’s most suitable for you. Is the mower suitable for your terrain? Does the product have adjustable blades to meet your needs? Can you change the height of the cut? A lot of mower manufacturers include different height options in their models. Does your battery mower come with a grass collection box, or do you have to pick up the grass yourself?
Ask yourself if your mower can mulch or recycle. Mulching happens when grass cuttings are finely cut, then dropped onto the lawn. As no nutrients in the cuttings are lost, this extra step helps to keep your grass looking green and fresh.
You should also consider how much maintenance your mower will need. If you have a busy lifestyle, it may be easier to opt for a low-maintenance model.
Another thing to think about is the battery run time. If you have a small to medium-sized lawn, then you won’t need a long running time. However, someone with a bigger lawn may want to invest in a lawn mower with a higher battery running time over a smaller mower.
Are you looking for a self-propelled mower? A self propelled battery mower will propel itself, which makes these models easier to operate. Consider this choice if you have back problems or a large lawn to mow.
Mowers that come with a mulching option also often feature side discharge, where the cuttings are put to one side as you cut the grass. This is good for large areas of grass that don’t need to be kept tidy.
It’s worth thinking about whether you want a mower that requires minimal set-up. Do you want to use other outdoor equipment with the same power source?
One of the most important features to look at when buying a cordless lawn mower is the batteries. Look for quality and power; models can come with lead-acid batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries, or lithium-ion.
Nickel-cadmium batteries are probably best avoided simply because they don’t hold the charge as well as others. Certain models have fixed batteries, and some have batteries that you can remove for recharging. Whatever type you choose to go with, think about what’s most convenient to you.
Consider brands, too. Well-known brands such as Black and Decker, Dewalt, Milwaukee, Stihl, and Sun Joe are all trusted in the public eye. If you’re taking a chance on an unknown mower brand, check the comments or reviews on the product page. This will give you an idea of whether the brand can be trusted (and will save you testing out a dud for yourself!)
Features
When purchasing a battery-powered lawn mower, it’s really important you consider the features. Is it lightweight or heavy? If you want something that’s portable and easy to move around, you’ll need to opt for a lighter lawn mower.
Are you concerned about the noise level? Battery-operated lawn mowers tend to make less sound, thanks to the lack of a noisy gas engine, which is great news for your neighbors! But make sure to research this, as some electric lawn mowers might be quieter than others.
For storage reasons, consider whether the model is easy to fold away and store. What type of lawn do you have? Ensure the size of the model works for your lawn. Some battery mowers come with collection boxes that can be attached or unattached.
Consider cutting decks. Is a mower with rotating blades more suited to you? This may be the case if you have rougher grass on the lawn’s surface. Bigger models tend to come with grass collection bags instead of boxes.
Price Range
If you’re more interested in how cost-effective your lawnmower is over the quality of the cut, then a battery-operated model may be for you. As this mower runs off battery power, the only money it will cost you is the initial price of the product. Although all mower products tend to vary in price, a battery lawn mower is usually the cheapest lawn mower option, and you may be able to get a decent one with plenty of features for under $300. Depending on features, mowers can reach up to and over $700.
If you’re thinking of getting a gas mower, consider the additional price of fuel. The last thing you want is to spend a total of $500 on a decent mower and end up paying out additional expenses on maintenance.
Keep in mind that higher prices can be deceiving; they don’t always mean you’re looking at the best battery operated lawn mowers for you. You may pay more depending on what your mower offers. The mower may come with dozens of features, such as additional height adjustments, lots of controls, more torque, three levers, and even a cup holder, but you may not need them all to get the kind of results you want. Yard conditions vary, and someone with a lot of land or an abundance of slopes or hills will need a different mower than someone with a small garden.
Take a look at the various types available, write down potential choices, compare prices, and see which one is most suited to your needs.
How To Fix an Electric Lawn Mower That Won’t Start
As simple as it sounds, double check to make sure the power supply is connected. Longer power cables are often pulled from the outlet when moving the lawn mower around. Change to a different outlet or cable to try to restore the power to the lawn mower. Some extension cables can be reset by a button on the side of the reel.
If that fails, attempt to replace any defective fuses in your house. Your electric outlets might not be working if the unit has tripped the power or blown a fuse. Test the outlet cable by plugging in another appliance. Your fuses need attention if the appliance doesn’t work.
Try to disconnect and empty the cuttings bag. (The place where cut grass is collected – usually found at the back of the mower). The lawnmower might not start if the bag is full. Additionally, the mower might cut out during use when the bag exceeds its full capacity.
Check that the lawn mower’s safety mechanism isn’t stopping the motor from starting. A lot of lawn mowers have a safety function that stops children from activating the motor – there tends to be a special button or lever that has to be held down while the “start” button is pressed.
Disconnect the lawn mower from the power supply and turn it over so you can view the blades. Make sure there’s no grass, leaves, or other debris preventing each mower blade from turning. Electric mowers stop working if the blades have restricted movement.
How To Change a Lawn Mower Battery
Lawn mower batteries are found in one of two places: under the mower’s hood or seat. To find it, turn off your lawn mower and remove the keys. Once you’ve located the right spot, release the latch so you can access the battery. If you find any tie-down strap or bar to hold the battery in place, then remove it.
When you dislodge the battery, ensure that you remove the black or ground wire. If you find the connectors are corroded, use a stiff wire brush to clean them. If the battery itself is badly corroded, apply baking soda and water paste to the terminals. Let this sit for a few minutes before using a brush and water to rinse off the corrosion. Dry any leftover water with a soft cloth.
Be careful to make sure you don’t get the mixture or water into the battery cells – baking soda neutralizes battery acid and will neutralize the battery if it finds a way inside.
If the connectors remain secure, use a flat head screwdriver to slowly pry the connector apart and away from the terminal. Ensure you don’t force the cable off, as you might accidentally pop off the connected terminal.
When the negative cable is removed, remove the red cable. Finally, when you’ve removed the battery from the holder, clean out any corrosion or debris. Put the new battery into the holder and re-attach the tie-down strap or bar.
When re-attaching the cables to your battery terminals, make sure to start with the positive cable – this is red. Connect it to the positive terminal and tighten the bolt to make it secure. Ensure that you attach the negative cable (which is black) to its respective terminal, too. After this, replace the cover for the battery. Test it to make sure everything is working in order.
How Long Does it Take To Charge a Lawn Mower Battery?
Ensure that you set the battery charger to 12 volts and 10 amps or less. Plug the charger in – the charger should charge the battery fully in one hour at the 10-amp setting. However, you might have to charge the battery longer if your amp setting is lower. Always check the battery information.
Did you know?
Cordless lawnmowers have the maneuverability of a gasoline-powered mower and the environmental friendliness of a corded electric mower.
