Different Types of Lawn Mower Blades
There are five different types of mower blades: standard, mulching, low-lift, high-lift, and gator blades and are suitable for use on push mowers, riding lawn mowers, or zero-turn mowers.
Standard blades
Are the most common type. They are standard because they provide a good balance of performance and affordability.
Mulching blades
Are designed to chop up the grass clippings into tiny pieces so that they can be absorbed back into the lawn. This is a great option if you want to reduce the number of grass clippings that you have to dispose of.
Low-lift blades
Are designed for use on taller grasses. They lift the grass up before cutting it, preventing clogging and allowing the blade to cut more efficiently.
High-lift blades
Are similar to low-lift blades, but they are designed for even taller grasses. They are also better at clearing debris from the lawn.
Gator blades
Are a type of high-lift blade that is specifically designed to cut through wet grass. They are called gator blades because they have teeth-like protrusions along the edge of the blade that help it to grip the grass as it cuts.
Blade length
Blade length is an important aspect to consider when buying a lawnmower blade. If your blade is too long, it can be difficult to use and could potentially be too long to fit in the blade slot of your lawnmower. If it is too short, however, it will lead to inadequate coverage of your lawn, making it a harder and slower process when attempting to mow your lawn smoothly and thoroughly.
It is worth measuring your lawnmower carefully before you buy lawn mower blades so that you can easily find the largest blade that can be comfortably fitted to your mower.
How to Change a Lawnmower Blade?
If your lawn is looking ragged even when you’ve just mowed it, then it’s time to replace your lawnmower blade. Lawnmower blades blunt with use, and if left too long without sharpening they can become so blunted and damaged that you need to replace them completely. Replacing your mower blades can be a little fiddly, but if you follow our guide, you can replace your mower blade at home with relative ease and confidence.
First, tilt your mower up for easy access to the underside. It’s important to do this in such a direction as to avoid spilling oil everywhere; usually, tipping it back towards the handle is the safest option. You should ensure that it’s propped up carefully and stable to make sure it does not tip over during the blade replacement process! Unplug the spark plug for safety, to prevent accidental fires or other damage.
Using a socket wrench, unbolt the blade mounting bolt while using your other hand to hold the blade still for safety. Turn the bolt counterclockwise to do this, and then carefully remove the blade, being sure not to lose any washers or other small components of the blade assembly.
Then, install your replacement lawnmower blades in the same direction as the old one. Do this carefully, while wearing protective gloves, as it will be far sharper than the old blade you’ve just removed. Tighten up the nut again, but do so carefully to avoid over tightening, which can warp the blade and potentially cause significant problems.
Once you’ve done this, you can replace the spark plug, turn your mower over to its normal orientation, and you’ll be ready to start mowing again.
How to Sharpen a Lawn Mower Blade?
When used regularly, your mower blade can become blunt. Before it becomes blunt and damaged enough to require full replacement, though, it will become slightly blunt, reducing performance and cutting efficiency significantly. When that occurs, a blunted blade can be salvaged by removing it from your mower and sharpening it carefully.
First, tip your lawnmower over and ensure that it’s stable and secure. Tip it backward rather than sideways in order to reduce the chance of oil spillage and later problems. Then, remove the spark plug to prevent sparking and injury as you replace the lawnmower blade.
Using a socket wrench, undo the fastenings of the blade and remove it carefully, making sure you take note of which way up the blade rests in its housing to ensure that you don’t replace it upside down! While you do this, use your other hand to carefully hold the blade in place, preventing it from swinging free while you disconnect the housing.
To sharpen the blade, clamp it in a vise or strong clamp, ensuring that it’s held firmly in place with no room for wiggling. Place some newspaper beneath it to catch escaped metal filings in the process to simplify the cleanup process! Then take a large metal file and run it along the cutting edge of the blade.
Pass your file from the inside to the outside of the blade until the cutting edge is visibly shiny and clean, and then turn the blade over and repeat the process on the other edge. Follow the angle of the blade as you do this to ensure that the cutting edge stays smooth and regular.
Once everything has been sharpened, reinstall the blade and replace the housing. Tighten up the nut again until the blade is closely fitted with no room to shake. Do not over tighten the nut, however, as this can cause warping of the mower blade and major problems later!
How to Clean a Lawn Mower Blade?
Cleaning a lawn mower blade regularly can help to keep your lawnmower running at peak efficiency for as long as possible, as well as reducing the requirement for regular, intense maintenance and helping your mower blades to last as long as they can. A clean blade can also help to keep your grass healthy and growing well!
First, tip your lawnmower over. Tilt it backward rather than sideways to prevent oil spillage, and make sure it’s firmly held in place to prevent the mower from falling during maintenance. Then, remove the spark plug. This is for your own safety, to reduce the risk of sparking and injury while you clean your lawnmower blade.
Spray down the blade and its housing with a hose to remove all the crusted grass residue and simplify the manual cleaning process as far as possible. The higher the pressure your hose can muster, the easier you’ll find it to blast the majority of the debris from your mower blade and blade mower housing. Brush off any stubborn residue with a stiff wire brush, and then prepare to remove the blade from its housing.
Use a socket wrench to remove the nut, and carefully lift the blade out of the mower housing. Wipe the blade down on both sides, and coat it with a thin layer of vegetable oil to prevent further debris from attaching to the blade in future use. Then, replace the blade, tighten the nut again (being careful to avoid over tightening), replace the spark plug, and you’re ready to mow again.
Expert Tip
If you sharpen your lawnmower blades on a regular basis, you can help them to last for as long as possible, boosting their lifespan and reducing the need for replacement significantly. Don’t just wait for the blades to become unusably blunted before you sharpen them!
Did you know?
Different shapes of the blade can affect how the grass clippings left when you trim your lawn are expelled. Some blade shapes funnel the clippings upwards, towards the mower bag, while others funnel them back to the ground below for mulching purposes. Read more tips.
