The POWERTEC BGSS801 Slow Speed Bench Grinder is a bit different from most other bench grinders on the market. This 8-inch bench grinder unit operates at a slower speed than most other models, with a ½ hp motor offering unusually smooth and quiet operation for a less intrusive experience. This motor powers a 1725 rpm grinding system, designed specifically to prevent tools from overheating, which can be a major problem with faster speed bench grinders.

This is enhanced by the white aluminum oxide used to make the wheels, which produces much less heat than the materials used in many other bench grinders. It doesn’t have the power of a larger and faster bench grinder, but for lighter grinding applications or regular sharpening, it is more than enough for most domestic purposes.

Bench Grinders Buyer’s Guide

Uses for Bench Grinders

Bench grinders have more uses than you might think. While most people primarily use their bench grinder to sharpen and shape metal tools and material components, there are also several other uses that are worth considering. If you want to get the most out of your bench grinder, then it pays to know as much as you possibly can about the various potential uses of this device!

Bench grinders are very useful for plumbing work. They can be used for cutting pipes, grinding them down to the right length for any space, or just helping to smooth them out a bit, removing rough patches. This can make working with metal or plastic pipes much faster and easier, reducing the frustrations of DIY plumbing projects significantly.

If you are planning on repainting a surface, a bench grinder can be used much like a high-speed sanding machine. This means that a bench grinder can speed things up significantly, smoothing off a surface for painting or removing layers of old paint at high speed.

Bench grinders can make short work of wooden surfaces. That means that you can smooth off floorboards, just like with a sander, or level out joints for building furniture more efficiently. As an added flooring use, a bench grinder can be used for removing grout from the spaces between tiles in order to regrout or replace tiles completely.

Alternatives to Bench Grinders

Bench grinders are not the only type of grinder available for home use. They are an excellent choice for many home DIY users, but there are some situations in which an alternative may be required. This is particularly relevant if space is a major concern for you, as bench grinders are generally the largest type of grinder and take up significantly more space than alternative styles tend to. The two main alternate types of grinder are die grinders and angle grinders. Let’s take a look at each of those in turn.

Die grinders are handheld power tools like Dremels. These are small, portable rotary tools that are great for small scale sanding and polishing of metal, wood, or plastic. These are also very useful for more intricate and detailed work such as etching or sculpting of a wide range of materials. They do not have the power or scale of bench grinders, but they are far smaller and better suited for fine detail work.

Angle grinders are also handheld tools but are somewhat larger than die grinders. They are an effective compromise between die grinders and bench grinders, offering the handheld portability of a die grinder and the large grinding surface of a bench grinder for efficient large scale work. Angle grinders are less well suited for detail work and etching than die grinders are, but are more efficient. They are also more portable than bench grinders, although not quite as powerful or versatile.

If you have got the space available in your home or workshop, then the large and powerful bench grinder is likely to be the best bet, as its power and versatility are significantly higher than either of the handheld alternatives. The space requirement may be an issue, though, as bench grinders tend to be large and heavy appliances that take up a great deal of space and require a sturdy and stable workbench to set them up on.

Bench Grinder Wheels

The most important part of a bench grinder is the grinding wheels, which provide the actual grinding power and abrasive surface needed for effective grinding. It is important to consider both the size of the wheel and the material used to construct the wheel itself, as well as the shape of the wheel, when choosing a bench grinder, as both of these factors will have a major effect on the bench grinder’s performance and which situations it is particularly appropriate for.

The “size” of a bench grinder refers to the diameter of its grinding wheels. While a wide range of sizes are available, the two most common are 6-inch bench grinders and 8-inch bench grinders. 6-inch grinding wheels are enough for most home users, as they are large and powerful enough for most DIY tasks that are likely to arise in the home. 8-inch wheels are mostly required by professionals who need a more industrial bench grinder, although they are also entirely suitable for home use. The one thing worth being aware of is that 8-inch bench grinders tend to be much larger and heavier than their 6-inch counterparts and require much more workbench space in order to function comfortably.

The types and materials involved in the grinding wheels are also important. Different wheel materials have different properties, and that affects which materials they are best used for grinding. For example, cast iron is the best ground with a silicon carbide abrasive wheel, while steel objects are best suited to aluminum oxide grinding wheels.

In terms of shape, the vast majority of grinding wheels on the market are straight wheels, with simple straight edges leading to a flat surface, but this is not the only type available. You can also get tapered wheels, where the sides of the wheel taper towards a narrower rim. This is ideal for more delicate work such as gear teeth or screw threads, as the narrower edge gives more control. The third major type available is the cylinder wheel, a wide, hollow wheel that has a very large grinding surface. This style is ideal for producing large, flat surfaces, but gives very little in the way of fine control over grinding.

Other styles of wheel are available, including diamond wheels, cut off wheels, and saucer wheels, but these are rarely seen in bench grinders for home use, and are more commonly available in specialist kits for professional use, as they are specialty wheels that are only really useful for certain very specific applications.

Expert Tip

Eyeshields are included with many bench grinders, but for added safety, it is always worth wearing goggles of some sort in order to protect your eyes as well as possible.

Did you know?

If you are experiencing wobble and unsteadiness in the grinding wheel of your bench grinder, then you should take it to a maintenance specialist for wheel dressing to correct this!
