Steam Mop Buyer’s Guide
It might be that the reason you are reading this is that you have already decided that you need to purchase a steam mop for your home, but it could be that you are still undecided. So before we discuss which steam mop to buy, the first question to answer is; why should you buy a steam mop. Our reason for purchasing a steam mop is because of how quick and easy this product makes cleaning the floor, with a steam mop, you simply fill the water tank to the level that you need and give it time to heat up. Once heated, you can use this to sanitize and sterilize your floors without the use of any bleach or chemical-based products – this is often preferred by those of us with children or pets roaming around our houses.
Once you have decided that a steam mop is the next essential in your cleaning arsenal, your next decision is what you want from a steam mop. There are several things you can differentiate between when choosing a new steam mop; the size of the mop head, the volume of the water tank, the time it takes to heat up, whether the steam is continuous or if a pedal/button is needed to release it, and finally the way you change the mop cloths.
Mop Head Size
The size of the mop head might not be a huge consideration for you, depending on the size of the floor that you are looking to clean. However, the larger the surface volume of the mop head, the quicker any floor will be cleaned. What you will need to consider when comparing the size of the mop head is whether you want a wider mop head for the surface area or a more compact mop head to reach corners and baseboards more easily.
Water Tank Volume
Water tank volume is another important consideration when comparing which steam mop will be best for your home as this determines how long you will be able to clean for continuously. A larger water tank will allow you to move more easily from room to room without having to reheat the water – providing the cord will reach. However, larger water tanks can take longer to heat up initially. The alternative is a smaller water tank, which will heat the water more quickly, but you will be able to use it for a shorter period of time.
When making this decision, the best way we found to judge this is how often you will be using the steam mop and how big the floors are that you will be cleaning. If you are cleaning a large floor, but more often, you may well be able to use a smaller water tank as there will be less dirt and grime to remove.
When looking at the steam output of the mops, you are comparing an important factor, which is whether or not the mop delivers a continuous steam output or if a button or pedal is required to release this. This can be especially important if you will be cleaning with young children or pets in your home where a quick shut off of steam could be necessary for their safety. Most of the steam mops we have reviewed include variable steam outputs to suit the type of cleaning you are doing and if there are additional stains to remove. Some of the mops we have featured also include a boost button to remove particularly stubborn stains.
Changing The Mop Cloths
When looking at the way that the mop cloths are changed, you can choose whether or not the cloth can be detached without handling it to save your hands from becoming dirty while you clean. This is a personal preference and can depend on the level of dirt on the cloth as you clean.
Costs To Count
Another aspect to consider when purchasing a steam mop is the cost, you will not only be looking at the upfront cost, it will be the recurring cost also. This will, of course, be higher if you purchase a steam mop which does not have reusuable cleaning cloths. If you do purchase a steam mop with
reusable or washable mop cloths, they will include either one or two of these cloths on purchase, but all models we have reviewed have the option to buy further cloths. The most important thing when using reusable mop cloths is ensuring that you follow the washing instructions for the cloths; otherwise, most cloths that we have tested will shrink, increasing costs for the future. However, if you follow the washing instructions, you can reduce the recurring costs considerably.
Finally, a feature that may or may not be important to you is if the steam mop converts into a handheld cleaner, either for easier cleaning of baseboards and corners or for cleaning other surfaces. Some steam mops can also be used on wall tiles or even to steam garments, so if this is something that would benefit you, these models would be worth focussing on.
Steam helps clean more than just floors, so if you have tiled walls or garments that need to be steam cleaned a convertible steam mop is recommended as a cleaning all-rounder for your home.
Did You Know?
Most steam mops will remove 99.9% of germs on the surface you are cleaning, without any chemicals at all, making steam mops sanitary and effective without a chemical residue being left behind.
