Lawn Aerator Buyer’s Guide

A lawn aerator is a key piece of equipment for any gardening enthusiast, helping to keep your lawn green, healthy and beautiful.  As all gardeners know, beauty starts from within and so to achieve a healthy lawn you must first achieve healthy soil.  Soil can become compact and dry, particularly within a hot climate.  This results in the soil deep down being unable to access air, water, nutrients, and fertilizer, basically starving the soil and the roots of what they need to thrive.

Penetrating the soil and creating narrow, long holes in the soil ensures that these essential components reach the roots, providing exactly what your lawn needs to grow and be green and healthy.

Type of Lawn Aerators

Traditionally, a lawn aerator is pulled or pushed across the lawn.  This may be the best type of aerator for medium to large sized gardens as you are able to cover a wide area of lawn.  However, for a smaller lawn or for trickier areas, aerator shoes are available.  They consist of you strapping the spiked shoes onto your feet so that you can then walk across your lawn while your aerator shoes use your bodyweight to penetrate the ground.

You can also purchase a handheld manual aerator which requires you to either push the aerator into the ground by hand or by using the foot bar to use your legs to push into the soil.

Price of a Lawn Aerator

Considering you may only use a lawn aerator twice per year, you may not want to spend a great deal of money purchasing the tool.  Aerator shoes can cost in the region of $20, which is an inexpensive purchase which still provides great results.  Aerator shoes are also easy to clean and store away.  A handheld manual aerator tool may cost you in the region on $40, however, whereas a larger tow-behind or pushing aerator may cost around $150 – $200.

How Does a Lawn Aerator Work?

When the spikes penetrate the ground, narrow holes of around 2-inches deep are created.  This allows air, water, nutrients, and fertilizer to reach the roots beneath the surface.  As the roots of the lawn have access to air, water, nutrients, and fertilizer, the lawn can then grow better and become more healthy and more attractive.

How do I use a Lawn Aerator?

Most lawn aerators involve pulling or pushing the device across your lawn so that the spikes can penetrate the ground and create holes of around 2-inches deep.  There are some electric models on the market, however, along with some handheld manual choices.  An effortless choice is to choose aerator shoes which involve strapping spiked shoes to your feet and walking across your lawn. Aerator shoes are also cheaper to purchase and are easier to store away.

How Often Should I use a Lawn Core Aerator?

You should aerate your lawn at least once per year to loosen the soil and enable nutrients to penetrate the roots.  However, aerating your lawn twice per year is recommended, particularly for compacted soil or for soil with clay content.

Expert Tip

In order to provide the best health for your lawn, aerate your lawn in the Spring while it is cool and then again in the Fall while the weather is also cool.

Did you know?

In medieval England, lawns first started to become popular, located in the surrounding areas of castles.  This was so that the watchmen found it easier to scan the horizon for enemies.
