Jobsite Radio Buyer’s Guide
When buying a radio for your jobsite, a number of factors must be considered to ensure that you purchase a product that is suitable for your needs, especially as some of these models are on the expensive side.
Radio vs. Speaker
Firstly, consider whether or not you want your radio to actually be a radio, a few of the models we have reviewed today have no radio capability and act solely as a speaker, whereas, others have several preset radio stations to give you quick access to your favorite stations. You also need to consider whether or not you will have access to wifi to be able to stream music on the site you are working on – if not, a radio compatible model is a must.
Size of the Jobsite
Next, we recommend you look at the size of the jobsites you would be using the radio on and how far away from the unit you would be working as a maximum. Some of these speakers are really compact, and as a consequence, have a lower sound range, so getting these ones for a larger jobsite would not be suggested. The other thing to consider when purchasing a radio is where you will be working in proximity to the radio – if it has a short Bluetooth connectivity and your phone is in your pocket when you walk away, you will lose the music for everyone on the site.
Size of the Radio
You should give careful consideration to the size of the radio that you are buying, a bigger radio allows for bigger speakers and perhaps a better sound quality, but could also make it harder to transport. If you are at an unsecured jobsite and need to transport the radio to and from the site, one of the models with a transportable handle may be easier, we’ve also included the weight of each model in our features table.
We’ve also found that most of the models will allow you to charge your devices, whether this is the smartphone you are using to stream music or other portable devices that can be charged via USB. Most of the models we have reviewed can be used with either batteries or AC adaptor for longer usage, and if battery-powered can be charged from the adaptor for the batteries of same-make tools. We like that this means there are fewer power cords around the jobsite, which is safer and easier to keep track of.
Your budget is also something to think about; if this is a radio, you will be using very infrequently, the price tag of some of the higher range models will possibly be too much. However, if this is something you will be using daily, it will pay for itself quite quickly in the amount of usage you can get from the higher range models. If you are concerned about the cost of the model, we recommend making full use of user reviews from other jobsites, this is the best way to find out how the units work in place during the working day.
While on your jobsite you may need to find somewhere to store small valuables or your smartphone, several jobsite radios on the market include a weatherproof compartment that can be used to store these items inside the durable casing of the radio. If you do not need this feature immediately, it will not detract from the functionality of the radio.
Why buy a Jobsite Radio
Finally, you may be asking yourself why specifically to spend the amount of cash required to buy a jobsite radio instead of a regular radio; the answer to this is simple: a jobsite radio will give you the durability and protection against the elements and the debris from the conditions of working in a jobsite. A variety of the models we have reviewed are weather, dust and water-resistant, in addition to the protections afforded by the casing materials to protect against drops and knocks.
If all of your tools are the same brand, it is beneficial to purchase a jobsite radio model of the same make, allowing you to use the same AC adaptors on site.
Did You Know?
Although it seems obvious, you will need to look at the durability of the model you buy as some models do not have the durability you would expect and need.
