Gas Grill Buyer’s Guide
It is vital that you store your propane tanks for your gas grill carefully and appropriately, despite their heavy weight and inconvenient size. All pressurized gases are dangerous, and flammable ones such as propane are even more dangerous. It is, therefore, important that you protect your gas canisters from impact and piercing and store them in controlled temperatures.
Avoid bringing tanks of propane indoors, due to the major fire risks of these gas canisters. They should be kept outside, and insulated as effectively as possible. It is worth investing in thermal jackets for your propane tanks, as they can help to keep the tank at a more constant temperature and are easy to buy in a wide range of shapes and sizes.
Even when insulated and protected carefully, store your propane tanks at least a full 10 feet away from flammable materials of any sort, as the fire risks should not be taken lightly.
How to Cook Ribs on a Gas Grill?
Gas grills are great for powerful and efficient cooking, but not so great for barbecuing ribs and achieving that tender, smoky texture and flavor that you’re looking for from a rack of ribs. Fortunately, there are a number of tricks you can use to get better results when cooking ribs on a gas grill.
You’re going to need a gas grill with two independent burners for cooking ribs, as they need to be cooked indirectly to get that soft, tender texture. Once you’ve prepared your meat, it’s time to prepare the grill. Take a handful of damp wood chips and wrap them in foil, before poking a few holes in the foil to allow the smoke to escape.
Then place the foil parcel next to the burner and turn the heat on high. Once you see smoke emerging from the parcel, turn the heat down. At this point, you can place the ribs carefully on the grill some distance away from the burner to keep the heat relatively low and close the lid of the grill tightly.
Give it an hour or so before you open the lid again in order to keep the smoke in. After that, you can open the lid, brush them with sauce, and cook for another 20 minutes or so on each side at a higher heat.
How to Clean a Gas Grill?
After you finish using your grill, you should always ensure that you clean it thoroughly, as old grease and food residue can affect the taste of any food you cook on it later, as well as attracting insects when the grill is in storage. There is a range of options for cleaning gas grills, though.
The easiest option is to scrub the grates thoroughly with a stainless steel grill brush and warm soapy water, scraping the residue from the grill grate while the metal is still warm. This requires a specialist brush but gives a thorough cleaning effect.
Similar results can be achieved by scraping the hot grates with balled up aluminum foil held in a pair of tongs to protect your hands, with the added bonus that you can use the same pieces of foil that you’ve been cooking with.
A slower but more effective option is to throw the grates into a large bag with a mixture of baking soda, ammonia, and vinegar, and then leave it to soak for 24 hours. The chemical reactions here will effectively scour even more stubborn greasy residues from your grill plates, cleaning them naturally and powerfully.
How long to Grill Chicken on a Gas Grill?
It’s always important to make sure that your food is cooked properly all the way through, and especially important to do that with meats such as chicken where the health risks of improper cooking can be severe. Different cuts of chicken take different lengths of time to cook, but here are some general guidelines.
Boneless breasts are the fastest cooking piece of chicken, requiring 6 to 8 minutes on each side, so a total of 12 to 16 minutes. Drumsticks and wings take 8 to 12 minutes per side, or 16 to 24 minutes total. Larger pieces such as legs, thighs, or bone-in breast pieces require 10 to 15 minutes of cooking on each side for a total of 20 to 30 minutes.
It’s always worth cutting into the chicken to check that it looks cooked inside, though. Don’t rely purely on cooking times, as individual pieces of chicken vary in size significantly and therefore can take different lengths of time from the general guideline times.
Charcoal gives that smoky grilled flavor more easily than gas, so if you’re looking to get that taste really strongly on a gas grill it’s worth adding a tiny bit of liquid smoke to your food. Only a tiny bit, though, as it’s a strong flavor!
Did you know?
Gas grills give more constant long term heat than charcoal grills, so they are actually better for larger, longer grilling parties than the more traditional charcoal grill option.
