The variable you will use will be: “5” for no insulation, “1.5” for a little insulation, “1” for average insulation, and “0.5” for excellent insulation. With this in mind, you will multiply the insulation quality by the total cubic feet by the desired heat rise. You’ll then divide this number by 1.6. This will give you the BTU required.
Using the previous example, and assuming your garage has average insulation, your formula will look like this: (1 x 1,000 cubic feet x 50 heat rise) / 1.6 = 31,250 BTU. Finally, add 10% to the BTU number that you determined. This buffer will act as a safety margin, ensuring that the unit is capable of tackling unusually cold weather while not unnecessarily wasting too much energy.
So, using our example, you will simply perform these two steps: 31,250 BTU x .10 = 3,125 and then 31,250 + 3,125 =34,375 BTU.
