Concrete Paint Buyer’s Guide

Epoxy Paint

There are two types of garage floor paint easily available on the market: latex acrylic paint and acrylic epoxy paint. Epoxy floor coverings can be found in 2 part form or premixed 1 part paint, but both offer similar properties, clearly distinct from those of latex acrylic paint.

Epoxy paint contains epoxy resin, a strong, sturdy substance that helps to make the final paint more resistant to damage, chemicals, mildew, and moisture, as well as helping the paint to bond strongly to the concrete. It takes longer to dry and is more expensive and difficult to apply than latex paint, but these minor inconveniences are more than made up for by the increased durability and far longer lifespan of epoxy concrete paint for garage floors.

How to Remove Paint from Concrete?

You’re going to need to remove the paint from your concrete floor before you can apply any more paint, as painting concrete over the top of old paint residue can lead to poor coverage and flaky paint. In order to remove traces of old paint, you’re going to want to use chemical paint strippers to weaken the bond between the paint and the floor and then physically scrape the weakened paint from the concrete with a floor scraper.

This can be a difficult, time-consuming process, but it’s a necessary part of ensuring that your fresh coat of paint is able to stick properly to the concrete surface that you’re trying to repaint without flaking off. A thorough clean like this is important and will save you from having to reapply your floor paint faster than anticipated.

How to Paint Concrete Floor?

If you haven’t prepared your concrete floor properly, even the best concrete paint will fail to adhere properly. First, ensure that your floor is completely clean, starting with standard sweeping and mopping. Use heavy duty floor cleaners to remove any ingrained grease that might prevent the paint from sticking.

If there are traces of previous paint on the floor, you may need to use chemical strippers or a floor scraper to remove them; all traces of previous floor coverings should be removed before you attempt to paint garage floors. After you’ve done that, though, you’ll be ready to start painting.

The painting process is no different from painting any other surface. You can use a paintbrush or a paint roller, depending on personal preference, and simply paint an even layer across the entire floor. Paint from the back of the room towards the exit, or you’ll paint yourself into a corner and be trapped by wet concrete paint!

Once you’ve applied one layer of paint, leave it to dry overnight before applying a second coat. This should be a quicker and easier process than the first, and it’s an important step for ensuring you have a fully sealed, properly protective surface.

If you’re using an epoxy paint, you might be able to get away without a second coat, but latex paints should always be applied in two coats. Once the second coat is fully dry (leave it overnight again to ensure it’s completely dry), you can move things back into the space and resume using the room again.

How to Paint Concrete Statues?

Concrete statues are a common form of outdoor decoration. Due to their complex shapes and position outside in the elements, it’s important to make sure they’re as well protected as possible. Concrete is a porous material, so it is important to clean concrete statues properly, paint them with a base coat and a main coat, and seal it properly to keep the paint in perfect condition for as long as possible.

Thanks to the effects of weather conditions and the porous nature of concrete, painted statues can peel and flake easily if you don’t follow these steps, leaving you with a battered, flaking concrete statue as a result. To clean your statue, scrub it with a large brush and plain water. Avoid using soapy water, as the soap can cause problems when you start painting!

Scrub all of the larger areas until they’re clean, and then use a toothbrush or other small brush to clean the smaller regions that are harder to reach with your large brush.  Then leave the statue out in the sun to dry completely. Once it’s fully dry, you’re ready to start preparing and priming the statue.

Fill in any cracks with epoxy putty, smoothing it over the surface with a wet spatula or a knife. Then leave the putty to dry for 3 or 4 hours before moving on to the priming stage. Once the epoxy is fully dry, pour a large amount of water over the statue, so it’s thoroughly soaked.

This might seem counter-intuitive, but it will ensure that the primer is fully absorbed by the statue, staining it beneath the surface and providing the best keying possible to the concrete surface of your concrete statue.

Prime the statue with your chosen primer, working from the bottom up. Paint about the bottom half, and leave it resting on its side to dry. Once it’s dry, prime the other half of the statue in your base color, making sure that you coat the entire statue smoothly and effectively.

Once the primer is dry to the touch (under an hour), you’re ready for a top coat. Use water-based acrylic latex paint rather than epoxy paint when painting concrete statues! Apply your top coat carefully to the entire statue, and then leave it to dry for a full 24 hours before moving on to the sealing stage.

Finally, using the same techniques as above, coat the statue with a clear UV and waterproof sealant to keep the surface of the paint looking pristine for as long as possible. This is an important protective step to help your paint last longer and keep your statue looking its best. Once you’ve left the sealant to dry for a full 24 hours, you’re finished with painting your concrete statues!

Expert Tip

If you’re using concrete paint on your garage floor, make sure you’ve got somewhere to put your car before you start painting! Once you’ve started painting the garage floor, you aren’t going to be able to store your car in there for two to three days.

Did you know?

Concrete changes size when the temperature changes! That’s why it’s important that concrete paint is slightly flexible so it can move slightly without cracking.
